They didn’t think in rigid patterns—they played musically.
They connected the fretboard in a way that felt intuitive, not mechanical.
That’s when I realized—I was teaching it all wrong.
I began shifting my approach. Instead of drilling patterns, I started showing my students how to use the fretboard the way their heroes do.
We built the neck up step-by-step in small bit-sized stages.

Before too long they could see the entire fretboard as one big toolkit.
And something incredible happened...
My students stopped overthinking and just played.

At first, they didn’t even notice the transformation.
I'd watch them improvise, seamlessly flowing across the neck, locked into their playing, fully engaged.
And then I’d say: "Hey, you realize you’re playing all over the neck now? That sounds great!"
Their response as I brought them out of their soloing trance? "Oh yeah... I guess I am."
